In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Oktoberfest, New York street life, Harold Davis, layers tips and packing light.

  • Alan Taylor presents 21 photos from the opening weekend of Oktoberfest. "The Associated Press reports that the cost for a one-liter mug this year is between 12.60 and 14.90 euros ($13.45 to $15.90)," he writes. Ah, Photokina, where art thou?
  • Shady Moments: New York Street Life showcases British photographer Mavis CW's recent photos of life in the city. This particular body of work examines the struggle to survive and thrive, from people struggling in phone boxes to pipe-smoking scooterists.
  • Harold Davis shares a Cloud Spiral made of alstroemeria petals. "These inner petals often have an appearance that reminds me of tiger stripes!" he writes.
  • Julieanne Kost (who must be back on her feet already) demonstrates Three Tips to Find, Filter, and Isolate Layers in Photoshop.

  • Kirk Tuck is Traveling 'Minimalist' this time. What's in his bag? "The new (to me) Leica M240 with the 50mm APO-Lanthar. And extra battery. The second camera is the Leica Q2. And two extra batteries. And that's it. Fits in a small Domke bag along with my phone, travel docs and a Kindle."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
