In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Ocean Photographer of the Year, Mayumi Suzuki, Matthew Brush, Kevin Rabor, macro photography, sunsets and retouching.

  • Oceanographic has announced its Ocean Photographer of the Year winners. First prize went to Jialing Cai of the Philippines for her shot of a female paper nautilus. "As underwater photographers, we aim to shoot in clear water but this image reminds us that grains of sand organic matter or tiny organisms are integral parts of the underwater environment," she says.
  • Marigold Warner reviews, HOJO, a series of self-portraits by Mayumi Suzuki that juxtaposes medical scans, collages and images of deformed vegetables through which Suzuki explores her experience of fertility treatment.
  • Suzanne Sease features Matthew Brush's photos of the Maryhill Festival of Speed, the world cup of downhill long board racing. "The first year I documented this race it was down pouring rain and terrible weather. My cameras got annihilated, but I didn't care," he says. "I was in the thick of it, determined to come out with some amazing shots."
  • In I Bought a New Camera With a Phone, Kevin Rabor trades in his iPhone 14 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. "I think what I am excited about is the 48-megapixel camera and the always-on portrait system," he says.

  • In Getting Started With Macro Photography, Zach Sutton provides "a brief breakdown of things you may need to be aware of when you step into the world of macro photography for the first time."
  • Jasenka Grujin presents 37 Photos of Sunsets to Inspire You. "To get started with sunset photography, consider exploring different locations, experimenting with camera settings and practicing your skills," she writes. "The key is to capture the essence of each unique sunset and use it as a source of inspiration for your creative endeavors."
  • On Reddit, a Retoucher for 10 Years wonders what happened to the market for that service.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
