In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at images of Robin Hood's tree, a kamra-e-faoree, finding Sudek negatives, the Fujifilm GFX 100 II, Kurt Weston, 21 portraits, incomes and Apple's theft deterrence.
- Pejman Faratin presents stunning images of Hadrian's Wall Sycamore Gap Tree, the 300-year-old Robin Hood tree, now believed to have been felled by a 16 year old.
- In A New View of Life Under the Taliban, Elena Becatoros presents Associated Press photographer Rodrigo Abd's images made with a hand-made wooden camera called a kamra-e-faoree, or instant camera. "They were a common sight on Afghan city streets in the last century -- a fast and easy way to make portraits, especially for identity documents," she writes. The images look ancient but they are "reflections of the country very much as it is now."
- In The Sudek Negatives, V.I. Voltz remembers "cleaning a dusty forgotten corner (all old darkrooms had these) one day" when he found some old negatives. After hours, "I got them out for a look. I recognized them instantly: Sudek." Josef Sudek was a Czech photographer known as the Poet of Prague. The story involves a theft and a sort of retribution.
- With Fujifilm GFX 100 II EDR, Read Noise Spectrum, Jim Kasson has begun posting a series of tests of the Fujifilm GFX 100, Mark II. They are already several.
- In Kurt Weston Didn't Let Losing His Vision Stop Him, Chris Gampat tells the story of the legally blind photographer who shoots with a Sony RX100 II.
- Jasenka Grujin shows 21 Dramatic Portraits to Inspire You and a link to Kent DuFault's guide to advanced composition.
- Rob Haggart continues his series on industry incomes with a Studio Photography Lighting Tech.
- Oliver Haslam explains why Looting Apple Stores Is Pointless. The stolen devices tell all.
