Matinee: 'Autumn' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

30 September 2023

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 520th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Autumn.

This 9:01 video by Jose Manuel Rebolleda, who goes by the ae Joe Recam, celebrates the fall season. It was recorded in Palencia, Madrid and around ValsaĆn, Segovia, in October 2020.

He got his start in photography at 17 when a relative game him a Chinon camera with an f2.8 lens. What started out as a hobby quickly turned into something else.

"From the very beginning I was excited by the concept of photography in black and white," he says. "The complex reality of the colors of our world made me move and evolve into a more comfortable area: the grayscale zone."

His love of photography has taken him all over the world. From Yosemite to Sengal and Turkey to Vietnam.

He is inspird by this quote from Fernando Pessoa:

Life is what you make of it. Journeys are travelers.

What we see is not what we see but what we are. Existing is the only need to travel.

I move every day, like every day, from season to season, on the train to my destination, overlooking the streets and squares, gestures and people faces, always looking the same thing and always looking in a different way like all landscapes are in the end "

"What we see is not what we see but what we are." Indeed. A thought to welcome autumn as the light of day diminishes.
