In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the week in pictures, Francesco Pennacchio, Alisa Martynova, a portrait of madness and October 2023 opportunities.

  • The Associated Press Week in Pictures from last week was curated by AP photo editor Tomas Stargardter in Mexico City.
  • In Unlike Flowers, She Won't Come Back With Spring, Magali Duzant reviews a series of images by Italian photographer Francesco Pennacchio who lost his mother 30 years ago when he was two. The series mixes historical images with his present-day Polaroids to create a memory of his mother.
  • Hypnerotomachia Venetiae is Alisa Martynova's dream-like project inspired by the lagoons of Venice. "I tried to see something that was beneath the beauty of Venetian facades and capture the original environment they were settled in," she says.
  • In A Portrait That Dares to Expose Musk's Madness, Michael Shaw and Cara Finnegan consider Mark Mahaney's photo of Elon Musk in the New Yorker.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
