In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at ethical photography, emerging talent, custom hats, edible plant seeds, newsstands, a new symbol for AI work, modeling agencies, Ctein and Spotcord.

  • The Festival of Ethical Photography has announced its winning projects. Twenty exhibitions on exhibit in Lodi, Italy, until Oct. 29 display the work of nearly 100 photographers from 40 different countries.
  • LensCulture has announced the 25 winners of its Emerging Talent Award.
  • Suzanne Sease features the personal project of Ian Spanier who wanted to capture the essence of custom hat maker Brandon Wise's craftsmanship "through a series of portraits of some of his clients, of course wearing his fine works of art."
  • Kate Mothes presents an ambitious series of portraits by Uli Westphal that captures the character of Every Edible Plant Seed. "Because the seeds are often so tiny they're impossible to capture with traditional camera lenses, Westphal added high-resolving microscope objectives -- the magnifying part of the microscope lens closest to the object -- to his camera," she writes.
  • Trevor Traynor traveled the world to photograph Newsstands: 2012 - 2019. The images were shot using the iPhones from the 4S to the 11 Pro Max.
  • Emilia David reports Adobe has created A Symbol to Encourage Tagging AI-Generated Content. "The symbol, which Adobe calls an 'icon of transparency,' can be added via Adobe's photo and video editing platforms like Photoshop or Premiere and eventually Microsoft's Bing Image Generator," she writes.
  • In Working With Top Talent to Develop Your Photography Portfolio, Zach Sutton details how he works with modeling agencies using concept boarding and providing makeup artists and hair stylists.
  • Ctein is recovering some of the 400 columns he's written since 2006 using the Wayback Machine. A list of the titles with keywords with links to 28 of them is now up at Ctein's Columns. Load time is unusually slow so be patient.
  • Howard Oakley has released the second beta version of Spotcord. The free utility can search metadata to build a vocabulary of keywords found in your images and other documents.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
