In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Associated Press photos of the week, Ismail Ferdous, Wildlife Photography of the Year winners, the OM System Tough TG-7, IBIS on the Fujifilm GFX100 II, the art of conservation and limiting AI rights.

  • The AP Week in Pictures: Europe and Africa includes 14 images curated by AP chief photographer Thanassis Stavrakis in Athens.
  • Bangladeshi photographer Ismail Ferdous has won the Leica Oskar Barnack Award for 2023. His series Sea Bach reveals the colorful beach life and diversity along Cox’s Bazar Beach. "Instead of opting for the expected yellow light with its vibrant colors and contrasting mood, I wanted to capture the cultural vibrancy in a different light -- specifically, a neutral or white light," he says. So he shot during the winter.
  • Rachel Treisman presents the Wildlife Photography of the Year contest winners whose images show "The Beauty -- and Precarity -- of Nature. Just in time, too. "The historic 60th edition of the competition will be accepting submissions starting Monday and until early December," she writes.
  • In Red, Mike Johnston celebrates the OM System Tough TG-7, "an actual digicam, AKA digital point-and-shoot, in the era of the smartphone." Because it's not "only waterproof but crush-, shock-, freeze- and dust-proof as well." And comes in red (or black).
  • Two views of the same IBIS problem on the Fujifilm GFX100 II. In GFX 100 II, X2D -- Blur and Distortion With IBIS and ES, Jim Kasson writes, "IBIS is a good thing, but it can't completely deal with this situation." Which is using in-body stabilization with an electronic shutter. In Fujifilm GFX100 II: IBIS Bug?, Lloyd Chambers and his readers bemoan their fate, hoping for a firmware fix.
  • In Learning the Art of Conservation, Cassia Davis reports on a hands-on, five-day conservation workshop in which students had a chance to clean, repair tears and remove staples and tape from photographic materials in the original Johnson Publishing Co. archive. "The workshop began with an introduction to photography conservation, before breaking down the intricacies of the work with practical demonstrations," she writes.
  • In Photographers, Limit Your Clients AI Rights, Rob Haggart provides two versions of language recommended by the Artists Management Association to add to your contracts. The short version: "Deliverables not approved for AI use and/or AI training."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look six years back. And please support our efforts...
