Matinee: A Writing & Photography Workshop Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

14 October 2023

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 522nd in our series of Saturday matinees today: A Writing & Photography Workshop.

This 7:50 video shows the work of eight photographers from the U.S. and Norway who gathered earlier this week in Siena for a creative retreat and workshop offered by NORDphotography. The retreat was led by Sal Taylor Kydd.

The workshop was designed for advanced photographers hoping to develop their portfolio and interested in both writing and photography.

Each day began with a review of image and text with class critique and discussion of the work as well as writing exercises. Afternoons were spent shooting in and around Siena and the neighboring areas of Tuscany.

Workshop attendees were hosted at Tenuta di Spannocchia, a 16th century villa that was once the home of the aristocratic Spannocchi family. It was expanded in the 18th century and purchased by the Cinelli family in 1925. Furnished with historic paintings, original antiques and family heirlooms, it has seven double bedrooms with private baths for guests.

Behind the Scenes. A look at the workshop in action.

The video features the photography of Gail Samuelson, Sarah Collier, Ellen Slotnik, Dawn Watson, Rikki Tademan, Deborah Saul, Anne Walker and Julia Arstorp, each of whom is featured for a minute in this video.

We enjoyed seeing the stills and especially comparing the different approaches to the evocative setting in Tuscany. For a moment we were transported to another time and place -- even though everything happened in the last week -- guided by people who clearly know what they are doing behind a lens.
