In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Thein Zaw, Jaroslav Kučera, church Bingo, momtographers, a picture a day, new Lightroom presets, a Twist 60 sale, a $40 USB-C hub, a Capture One webinar and Ric Ford.

  • The Associated Press photographer Thein Zaw covers the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival with its leg-rowing boat races on boats with 40-100 rowers.
  • In his new photo book Calm Before the Storm, Czech photographer Jaroslav Kučera documents the period of "normalization" in the 1970s and 1980s.
  • Church Bingo features Angela Christofilou's series from 2019 of her grandmother's regular bingo games at St James church hall in Heywood, Lancashire. "With these images I want to celebrate the beauty in everyday moments, as well as to foster a greater understanding and respect for the diverse experiences of older people in our society," she writes.
  • Hillary Grigonis explains why Momtographer Shouldn't Be a Bad Word. I've scrolled past my own fair share of posts from self-taught beginners with a $500 camera, a kit lens, zero flash and a willingness to photograph a family for $20," she writes. "I usually scroll past these posts on Facebook with the same level of annoyance that I have reserved for pyramid scheme party invitations. But, the common factor is never simply that this person is a mom, but simply that this person is green." It's hard to be green.
  • In A Picture a Day (PAD and PAW), Mike Johnston reports he's found success just making an effort. "Just get out with the camera, look around -- join the hunt -- find something that works. Not just any exposure; something I'm halfway satisfied with," he writes. "And you know what? That really works."
  • Kirk Tuck really likes the new black-and-white presets in Adobe Lightroom. And he shows why.
  • Lensbaby is taking 20 percent off its Petzval-style Twist 60, which is going for $223.96 this week. Our small-sensor camera nullify the Petzval effect but we love the color rendering, as seen in Classic Battle Green Under Gray Skies.
  • Terry White recommends the $40 Plugable 7-in-1 USB-C Hub to connect gigabit ethernet, HDMI, SD/microSD memory cards and USB-C power.
  • Capture One will livestream a free webinar on its coming update featuring AI Masking and More on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Pacific. Registration required.
  • In a Note to Readers, Macintouch's Ric Ford announces he's taking a break from posting Apple news. And not by design. His new MacBook Pro "failed suddenly, unpredictably and completely shortly after the return period expired." Apple hasn't been able to repair it for three weeks and has refused to provide a replacement or refund.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
