In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Ian Parry Photojournalism Grants, Hiroshi Sugimoto, byThom Botswana workshop blog, the Nikon Z f, good read noise and GenAI's effect on photography.
- Matt Fidler presents images by the winners of the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant Awards. Mouneb Taim, 22, from Syria, received the Ian Parry photojournalism grant. Alexandra Corcode, 22, from Romania, received the Tom Stoddart award for excellence, while Sahl Abdelrahman and Nikoletta Stoyanova were both highly commended.
- Time Machine features key works from all of Hiroshi Sugimoto's major series. The exhibition at Hayward Gallery in London runs until Jan. 7, 2024.
- In 2023 Botswana Blog, Tony Medici describes each day of the recent byThom (Hogan) workshop.
- In Third Time's a Charm, Derrick Story reviews the Nikon Z f, which calls "truly a modern classic." And affordable at under $2,500 with the 40mm kit lens and the FTZ II adapter.
- Jim Kasson discovers The Reason for the GFZ 100 II ISO 80 Unusually Good Read Noise. There isn't really any. "It's all done with mirrors," he writes.
- In GenAI and the Forced Evolution of Photography: From Artifice to Authenticity, Paul Melcher suggests AI has shifted photographers toward authenticity. "As the lines between the real and the artificial blur, photography's role in preserving and portraying reality becomes even more paramount," he writes.
