In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Mangrove Photography Awards, Royal Photographic Society Awards, Australian aerials, street photography, buying used, black point subtraction and a big contract.

  • Winners of the Mangrove Photography Awards have been announced. Soham Bhattacharyya was named Mangrove Photographer of the Year for an image of an endangered tigress in the Sundarbans.
  • The 145th Royal Photographic Society Awards winners have also been announced. The society celebrates the photographers rather than one of their images, highlighting significant achievements, showcasing new and emerging talent and recognizing notable contributions from RPS members.
  • In Bird's-Eye View, Julieanne Kost presents her favorite images taken over Australia from small, fixed-wing aircraft or a helicopter with the doors removed.
  • In What Makes Street Photography Work? Russ Lewis writes, "What street photography attempts to bring about is an evocation of feeling. It doesn't attempt, as landscape photography does, to show beauty. It's an attempt to reproduce in the observer a reaction to a demonstration of humanity that made the photographer raise the camera in the first place."
  • In Best Place To Buy A Used Camera Or Lens, Dahlia Ambrose gives some advice about buying used before listing several places to buy.
  • Jim Kasson dislikes In-Camera Black Point Subtraction because it's something "that can be done at least as well in postproduction." In fact, if you click Auto in Camera Raw, you'll see the Black slider do just that.
  • Craig Oppenheimer negotiates a $68K contract for a Food Brand Client

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
