In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at ecology, Atacama, organogenesis, ProjectSeeThrough, headshots, Nikkors, value, Sonoma 14.1, a legacy and culture.
- Capturing Ecology features the winning images of the British Ecological Society's annual photography competition taken by international ecologists and students.
- Grace Ebert features images of Atacama Desert by Santa Fe-based photographer Jamey Stillings published in a new book by Steidl. Atacama "is home to massive mines harvesting a third of the world's copper and lithium supplies," she writes. But it's also "a lucrative site for generating wind and solar power."
- Suzanne Sease features Organogenesis: Building Blocks of Life, the personal project of Andrei Duman which, he says, "born out of my continued attempt to cope with my mother's fast progressing dementia."
- With ProjectSeeThrough Adobe is taking on glare and reflections. "Reflections are automatically removed, and optionally saved as separate images for editing purposes," the company said.
- Zach Sutton proposes Three Headshot Photography Styles to Try for Your Next Headshot Session.
- In Nikon Lens Guide for Z-Mount Mirrorless Cameras, Derrick Story details how to mount any Nikkor to a Z body.
- In Time Versus Value, Thom Hogan points out, "Cameras and lenses don't appreciate in value." So there are advantages to buying at the end of the product life cycle or even used. "Here's what I'd suggest you compare instead of the capability of your camera or the size of your lens: the photos you actually take," he writes.
- Apple has posted If You Can't Use Your Camera or Video Output Device After Updating to macOS Sonoma 14.1, a support article that explains "only cameras and video output devices that use modern system extensions are supported on macOS." One option is to restore legacy device support by booting into Recovery Mode and issuing the terminal command
system-override legacy-camera-plugins-without-sw-camera-indication=on
.- In What to Do With Professional Shots After a Death, a Reddit poster wonders how to dispose of an inherited lifetime's work. "I am left with an entire bedroom full of prints, slides, negatives and digitized media," she writes.
- In The War for Culture, Andrew Molitor gripes about who gets to decide what art is.
