In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at BirdLife Australia, Nadine Ijewere, Yubin, the Israeli hostage poster, 4,000 glass plates, setting up an Epson P900 and an autistic photographer.

  • The BirdLife Australia Photography Awards include mid-air fights, jabbering gang-gangs and villainous magpies by some of the 68 finalists from over 6,000 entries in this year's competition. Winners will be announced later this month.
  • The Guardian showcase the Disruptive Fashion Photography of Nadine Ijewere.
  • In Post Boxes and Tokyo Street Aesthetics, Magali Duzant reviews Yubin, a new book of images by Bruno Quinquet. "In his ongoing series Yubin, Quinquet has assumed the role of postman walking the streets of Japan, ward by ward, photographing postboxes," she writes. "His interest lies in seeing the city through the eyes of others; creating parameters for his projects, he assumes a role and performs the actions of a postman, a corporate culture investigator or an ill-informed botanical researcher, allowing the roles' daily routine to guide his image making."
  • In the latest Chatting the Pictures, Michael Shaw and Cara Finnegan discuss The Israeli Hostage Poster, an image taken by Amit Elkayam for The New York Times:

  • Kate Mothes reports A Photo Preservationist Saved a Trove of 4,000 Glass Plate Negatives spanning the 1860s to the 1930s. In 2019, Terri Carpucci found them in the trash and has since been preserving them, consulting with conservation experts and leaning how to clean and archive the fragile pieces before scanning them.
  • Kevin Raber posted a 22-minute video on setting up the Epson P900. A download is part of his advice: "I highly recommend downloading Epson Print Layout on all your devices and experience just how easy it has become to make good out-of-the-box first-run prints."
  • Rob Haggart received a comment on one of his industry income pieces from a Autistic Photographer that he has published as a separate piece. "I am both autistic and very talented and the former has made it incredibly difficult to keep my head above water," the photographer writes. "I should clarify that I am not inappropriate with my clients, nor do I make anyone uncomfortable -- if you met me, you'd have no idea I'm on the spectrum at first. But my brain is markedly different and provides very unique impediments and the industry is simply not set up to accommodate people like me."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
