In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Comedy Wildlife Photography Contest, Peter Dazeley, Chang W. Lee, criss-cross stairs, Andrew Moore, Mixbook, a food stylist and photographing fish in tanks.
- Forty-four finalists in the Comedy Wildlife Photography Contest have been announced.
- In The Beauty of the Natural World in Monochrome, Sarah Gilbert showcases images from Peter Dazeley's Monochrome: Platinum Images, a new book of his platinum prints of animals, plants and flowers.
- Chang W. Lee's photographs illustrate A Cook's Tour of the Tokyo Food Scene (gift link) by Timothy Taylor.
- In Design Pattern: Criss-Cross Stairs, Harold Davis celebrates a particular stair construction he finds all over the world. "The criss-cross has an element of practicality: it can reach more landings in a relatively compact space," he writes. "However, at times the crossings are ornamental because both stairs rise to the same plateaus."
- In Mist Casts the Hudson Valley, Kate Mothes features the dreamlike photographs of Andrew Moore. "He emphasizes the constancy of change and the sense of anticipation spurred by a new day or a bend in the road, revealing what an exhibition statement calls 'different kinds of lineages' that connect the present to the past," she writes.
- Dan Havlik reviewed photo book services in Mixbook Review: Simply the Best. "Newbies will love Mixbook's fun and easy-to-use software while more advanced users will appreciate the wide range of customization options to help you get creative," he writes.
- Rob Haggart profiles a Food Stylist for TV and print who makes $92K.
- A Reddit poster wonders about Photographing Fish in tanks. Advice covers both lighting and reflections.
