In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Danny Lyon, Søren Solkær, Yael Martinez, Grace Weston, PhotoDater AI and your kit.

  • In Civil Rights, Motorcycle Clubs and New Mexico LandscapesMatt Fidler presents a selection from 60 years of Danny Lyon's photography on exhibit in Santa Fe, N.M.
  • Kate Mothes features Søren Solkær's Enigmatic Photographs of starling murmurations prior to the opening of an exhibition of them at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle, Wash., next month. His book Starlings is now available for purchase as well, she reports.
  • Yael Martinez speaks about how proximity and empathy define his images in Atmospheric Illuminations. "After spending more than a decade taking photographs of my family and the families of other people who have disappeared, I'm trying to find a path that will lead me to generating a historical memory of my life," he says.
  • In How Grace Weston Explores the Human Psyche, Without Photographing Actual Humans, Hillary Grigonis writes, "Weston is essentially using an object that objectifies women to retell the longstanding stories that objectify women." Dolls, that is.
  • In PhotoDater AI Determines Approximate Picture Age, Kehl Bayern quotes MyHeritage, "The date estimation algorithm was trained on tens of thousands of curated, definitively dated historical photos to help the algorithm understand nuances such as clothing, hairstyles, facial hair, furniture and other objects that are characteristic of a particular decade." MyHeritage developed the software as a feature on its ancestry site.
  • Mike Johnston asks, How Many Cameras in Your Kit? Not how many do you own (his inventory comes to 20) but how many do you routinely use (that would be three for him). He used his Sigma fp to capture Halloween 2023.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
