In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's Week in Pictures, Ocean Photographer of the Year, cowboy boots, the Faroe Islands, Akbar Mehrinezhad, Black Friday shoppers and the Fujifilm GF 100-200mm.

  • The Associated Press presents its Week in Pictures covering elections in the Netherlands, the war in Gaza, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York and George Kittle scoring a touchdown.
  • Grace Ebert showcases the Ocean Photographer of the Year winners. "From a boastful lizardfish to a tiny paper nautilus floating among volcanic debris, the lauded shots document marine life above and below the surface, glimpsing not only the stunning beauty of land and sea creatures but also the threats many face given a warming planet and rampant pollution," she writes.
  • Kirk Tuck presents a slide show of Cowboy Boots displayed in stores on South Congress Ave. in Austin with a Panasonic S5 and Sigma 90mm f2.8. "Good thing you weren't using a monochrome camera. Wonderful colors," a commenter notes.
  • Steve Gosling shares his black-and-white landscape photos of The Faroe Islands. He likes working on the edge of a weather system. "I know that we British are reputed to be obsessed with the weather -- that is undeniable, I would admit -- but it's an obsession that is also true of landscape photographers, regardless of nationality," he writes.
  • Grace Holliday presents Akbar Mehrinezhad's Best Phone Picture of children were playing on a gas pipe. "I ran to capture it. Even without seeing their faces, it's storytelling," he says of the image of their shadows in the background and a pair of dangling feet in the foreground.
  • Gina Castro shows Where San Francisco Shoppers Flocked -- and Didn't -- for Black Friday in a series of photos.
  • In Sample Variation in the Fujifilm GF 100-200 at 200mm, Jim Kasson writes, "I now have some results from Raw files that a reader sent me and the people who have been pointing at sample variation have a point." Some of these same lenses are better than others, in short.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
