In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Sandra Day O'Connor, AP's Year in Photos, macro converters, Harman Phoenix film and "authentic".

  • Julius Constantine Motal and Gail Fletcher have compiled images from the life of Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman to serve on the U.S.Supreme Court, who died this week.
  • Not to rush things but the Associated Press has already published The Year in Photos. There are a measly 160 shots in the collection, so take the weekend.
  • In The Humble Close-Up Lens That You're Probably Not Using, Derrick Story celebrates the screw-in close-up lens. He shows what a +4 macro converter can do on a 40mm Nikkor. We regularly use Lensbaby's +4 and +10 macro converters on the Olympus 14-42mm II R kit lens here, as you may remember.
  • Chris Gampat talks to four people about Harman Phoenix, a new color negative film. He notes, "Harman states that you can expose it between ISO 100 to ISO 400, but that the results that they like the most come at ISO 200."
  • "Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year for 2023 is Authentic -- the term for something we're thinking about, writing about, aspiring to and judging more than ever," the company said. "And with the rise of artificial intelligence -- and its impact on deepfake videos, actors' contracts, academic honesty and a vast number of other topics -- the line between 'real' and 'fake' has become increasingly blurred."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
