In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at winter, animal street photography, Red Bull Illume winners, Margaret Lampert, software, Manual mode, top rented products, the Pocket Tripod and Hasselblad Masters.

  • Freeze Frames: The Wonders of Winter showcases images on exhibit at The Winter Editions at the Photographers' Gallery, London, until Jan. 21.
  • Grace Ebert features Animals From the Streets, Ashraful Arefin's street photography of of cats, rhesus monkeys and cows.
  • Winners of the Red Bull Illume contest have been announced.
  • Suzanne Sease features The Art of Growing Up, a documentary short by Margaret Lampert. It was, Lampert says, "inspired by a conversation I had with a mother of three about how one speaks to young children about all the craziness of the world we inhabit; how to make sense of so many things that are completely and utterly senseless."
  • In The Software Saga Continues, Thom Hogan looks at recent announcements about Capture One Express, Luminar Neo and Photo Mechanic. He's not happy.
  • Rob Wood explains How to Shoot in Manual Mode. "The main reason to shoot in manual mode is that it gives you a lot of control," he writes.
  • Zach Sutton lists the Top Rented Photo and Video Products of 2023 at LensRentals.
  • The $35 Pocket Tripod is a credit-card sized carbon fiber folding tripod with an adjustable angle for smartphones with or without a case. Tested to over 100,000 uses, it includes a lifetime warranty.
  • The Hasselblad Masters competition is now open for submissions. Winners will receive a Hasselblad 100-megapixel mirrorless medium format camera along with two XCD Series lenses, and a creative fund of €5,000 (about $5,500). The 2023 categories include Landscape, Architecture, Portrait, Street, Art, Project/21 (for photographers under 21). Deadline is Feb. 29, 2024.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
