In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Frida Kahlo, Lisa Carney, NONS Instax Back, saving old photos and LuLa's new editor.

  • Grace Ebert presents images from Frida Kahlo: Her Photos, a reissue of the 2010 book long out of print. "Containing annotations and notes, the tome features hundreds of black-and-white images that, before 2004, had been hidden in storage in the artist's Mexico City home," she writes.
  • Grace Holliday features Lisa Carney's Best Phone Picture, an iPhone 10 shot of her son in a ferry with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. "I was experimenting with exposure for highlights," Carney says, "while still being able to bring out lots of detail in shadows."
  • Chris Gampat is having fun with the NONS Instax Back for Hasselblad. "If you're jaded with digital cameras the way that I am, then consider the NONS Instax Back for Hasselblad," he writes. "Do this, especially if you own a Hasselblad 500 series camera."
  • Two sisters wonder How to Recover Photos That Are Darkening. "We have had a photo album growing up with the most lovely pictures but many are darkening and we are unsure what to do and how to save them," one writes. The advice to scan them is detailed but beyond them. The one asks, "Do I scan them using my phone or a different way?" Actually, while a flatbed is preferred, assuming you can wrangle the prints onto it, using a smartphone is not a bad option. Some scanning apps correct for alignment issues, you do get automatic image correction and it's easy to share the images.
  • Jon Swindall joins the LuLa team as senior editor to shepherd Luminous Landscape into the new year. "I'm here to help cultivate an environment that's both informative and inviting. We also want to create value where we can," he writes. That includes a 15 percent discount at LensRentals.

Sorry about the delay this morning. We lost our Internet connection for an hour. More to come, though! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
