In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at America, the week in pictures, Masters Underwater Imaging Competition winners, Johnson Publishing photos, Pentax's film project, scanning with a camera and the best new products.

  • In A Portrait of America, Gail Fletcher and Thalía Juárez present the best Guardian U.S. photos of the year.
  • The Associated Press showcases the global edition of its Week in Pictures for this week curated by AP photo editor Anita Baca in Mexico City.
  • Dive Photo Guide has announced the winners of its Masters Underwater Imaging Competition. They include Marco Gargiulo, who won the grand prize for his first place image in the Over-Under category and first place winners in the other categories: Fabien Michenet (Traditional), Byron Conroy (Macro), Suliman Alatiqi (Wide Angle), Yinan Liu (Conservation), Martin Broen (Black and White), Magnus Lundgren (Blackwater), and Alfred Schaschl (Short Film).
  • In Rare Photos of Eartha Kitt, the Jackson 5 and More, Meg Butler shares the first images to emerge from the Johnson Publishing Company Archive held at the Getty. The piece includes a playlist of Christmas songs by the artists depicted in the photos.
  • Pentax's Film Project to design a new 35mm film camera, should be what Young People, Now People want, Mike Johnston says. Old people aren't the target market.
  • Kirk Tuck pops in from vacation to post a piece on Learning How to Scan Film With a Camera that was supposed to go up earlier this month "but somehow got lost."
  • Zach Sutton lists the Best New Video and Photo Products of the year, according to the LensRentals staff.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
