Matinee: 'The Christmas Song' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

23 December 2023

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 532nd in our series of Saturday matinees today: The Christmas Song.

This 5:19 video shot by Meghan Salvatore captures Sergio Salvatore's piano performance of The Christmas Song by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells.

Tormé and Wells were roasting during a hot summer when they thought they'd "stay cool by thinking cool." Wells had started writing down things that are cool like Jack Frost. Forty minutes later they had what has become the most-performed Christmas song of all time, according to BMI.

For their part, the Salvatores have produced a similar holiday treat every year since 2020.

Shot from a number of angles, our favorite is the side view showing cars passing in the street outside the window. It's a reminder that we live in two worlds. The one beneath our feet and the one inside our head.

We'll leave you to enjoy it -- and the three other pieces in the series.

Happy holidays!
