In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at learning from film cameras, Wild Lives, fill flash, lens quality and Public Domain Day.

  • Jason Row suggests What We Can Learn From Shooting Film Cameras. "All this sounds great but you are not going to go out and buy a film camera just for this," he writes. "You can apply all of the above to your current digital camera just as easily."
  • Kevin Raber interviews Art Wolfe about his new 350-page book titled Wild Lives.
  • In Three Situations Where Fill Flash Improves Your Pictures, Derrick Story shows how flashing a little light can balance a portrait. Not on your smartphone, though. "Their wimpy LED lights are no match for intense outdoor lighting," he writes.
  • Mike Johnston is on vacation until Jan. 2 so he's rerunning some of his favorite old pieces like today's Lens Quality.
  • Public Domain Day lists some of the more prominent works first published in 1928 that will become freely available on Jan. 1, 2024. The Cameraman by Buster is among them.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
