In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at James Webb space telescope images, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Ernst Scheidegger, Generations of Resilience, the OM-1 Mark II, the Olympus XA design and Hal Buell.

  • Alan Taylor presents 12 New Galactic Images from the James Webb space telescope "showing incredibly detailed views of spiral galaxies in near- and mid-infrared light." Sometimes you just need to get off the planet.
  • Grace Ebert features images from the winners of the 2023 Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. "In its 59th year, the contest garnered nearly 50,000 entries from 95 countries," she writes. "The winning photos-- which include an electrifying shot of fireflies from Sriram Murali and Fernando Constantino Martínez Belmar's devastating documentation of deforestation in Mexico -- are on view through June 30 at the Natural History Museum in London."
  • Mee-Lai Stone looks at a few of Ernst Scheidegger's images from his early years shooting children in orphanages and prison to capturing the 20th century’s great artists. They will be on exhibit at Eye to Eye at MASI, Lugano, Switzerland, from Feb. 18 to July 21. (Previously, we linked to his back-bending ballerinas.
  • Fiona Shields reviews Generations of Resilience on display at PhotoBrussels. The photos from the '70s to the present by 22 Ukrainian photographers show the the journey from independence to invasion and the struggle for the future of the country. The show will run through March 23 at Hangar gallery.
  • Derrick Story takes A First Look at the OM System OM-1 Mark II while considering whether to upgrade from his original OM-1.
  • In I Had a Dream ... Thom Hogan wonders, "What if we resurrected the Olympus XA design for the digital era, but with some really modern twists?" It was small, it was simple, it took great photos.
  • Associated Press photo editor Hal Buell has died at the age of 92. Buell "led The Associated Press' photo operations from the darkroom era into the age of digital photography over a four-decade career with the news organization that included 12 Pulitzer Prizes and some of the defining images of the Vietnam War."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
