Matinee: 'Ready for the April 8 Total Solar Eclipse?' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

16 March 2024

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 544th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Ready for the April 8 Total Solar Eclipse?.

This 3:58 video is a simulation of the April 8 solar eclipse from the minute before second contact until after third contact using the free Photo Ephemeris.

Photo Ephemeris can be run in a Web browser or as an iOS app. A Pro version adds a few nice features but everything you need is included in the free version.

The video shows a photorealistic simulation of the eclipse as viewed from Park Hills, Mo., with a countdown and announcements from the app of the key events as they come in quick succession.

While the video itself is a great way to rehearse your eclipse shoot, running Photo Ephemeris during the eclipse on April 8 will be even more helpful.

But for some of us this simulation may be the closest we get to this celestial event.
