Walked right by it. Circled back. Chuckled. Took the camera out and lined up the shot. Walked on, head shaking.

Free Art. Nikon D300 with 18-200mm Nikkor at 18mm (27mm equivalent), f8, 1/1000 second and ISO 200. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

Now who would do that? Hang up some paintings with a little sign saying, "Free Art."

Did they mean "Free These Paintings From This Fence" or "No Payment Necessary"? We suspect "No Payment Necessary" was the idea.

We weren't tempted. The "Notice" and "Danger" signs of the power plant enclosed by the fence didn't factor into our decision. We were just on our way somewhere that would not have accommodated carrying a canvas.

But when we returned, we noticed someone else had been tempted. Either by the altruism of the one interpretation or the bargain represented by the other.

They took the middle painting, leaving the other two. A connoisseur, no doubt.

By the next day, it was all gone. But we suspect the installation had merely been removed by the powers that be. The rather artless utility company, that is.
