Fatigue visits us as soon as we get home from visiting Joyce at the nursing home. We turn on the TV, find the nightly news and take a nap. We know what the news is. But we don’t want to lose track of our dreams.

Dinner. Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max 15.7mm back camera at f2.8, 1/59 second and ISO 400 using the Adobe Indigo camera app. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

Even with a short nap, this puts the squeeze on dinner. We always have some dinner plan, designed to get through the weekly groceries efficiently. But some nights the nap falls short of restoring us and our plans seem a bit too extravagant.

It’s on nights like this that we fall back on an old, simple recipe like our garlic clam pizza, which dispenses with a sauce. Just throw the dough, oil it, salt it, sprinkle with shredded cheese, and cover with clams that have marinated in olive oil and lemon juice with chopped garlic and a little salt. Put it in the oven for 12 minutes while you open the chilled Chardonnay.

We had enough energy for that.

And when it comes out looking like the work of some old artisan pizza maker visited by Samantha Brown or Rick Steves, we think about taking a photo.

But the photo (seen above) is no mere memory that Google Photos can annoy us with in a year or so. It’s not so much a memory as a reminder.

It reminds us that half the pizza will still be in the refrigerator for dinner tonight. Along with half that bottle of wine.

Which tell us we can take as long a nap as we need.
