In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Kent State, airports, unusual pictures, costumes, portraits, Nagasaki, Maddie McGarvey, Buzkashi, the Godox iT30 Pro, Excire Foto and the Twirly Shirley.
- On the death at 74 of John Robert Cleary, who was shot in the chest by Ohio National Guard troops during an antiwar protest at Kent State University in 1970, the New York Times publishes images from that tragic day in When a Vietnam Protest on Campus Turned Deadly (gift link).
- The Associated Press is at the airport as FAA Scales Back Flights at 40 Airports.
- Reuters showcases 15 Unusual Pictures this week.
- Kate Mothes takes a look at Gerwyn Davies' Vivid Costumed Photographs that "toy with the intent of portraiture."
- The Guardian presents the winner and finalists of the Head on Portrait Prize.
- Harold Davis finds the Camphor Trees: Still Standing near the epicenter when the bomb fell on Nagasaki. He was told "around the time I was born my Dad, Martin Davis, was on the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, N.J. J Robert Oppenheimer arrived as he often did in his black Cadillac. While he was eating dinner with the fellows, my Mom, Virginia Davis, left the table, went out and wrote 'Ban the Bomb' in the dusty rear window of Oppenheimer's car."
- In I Photographed an Appalachian Family for 15 Years (gift link), Emi Nietfeld writes about the images Maddie McGarvey started taking when she was a sophomore at Ohio University who wanted to document grandparents raising their grandchildren. "Ultimately, I've found my role as a photographer becomes not just to see, but to stay," McGarvey says. "And by staying, to honor the fullness of a life that many might otherwise overlook."
- Suzanne Sease features Buzkashi, the personal project of Todd Antony. To understand the event, "Think polo -- but with a headless, eviscerated goat standing in as a ball, hundreds of riders and no formal teams," he says. "Watching Buzkashi matches was often like stepping directly into famous Napoleonic battle paintings."
- Feroz Khan reviews the tiny Godox iT30 Pro. He particularly praises the TR adapter from Godox, a TTL-capable hotshoe mount that tilts. "It helps you bounce the flash off a ceiling, giving a much more diffused, soft light to your photos," he writes.
- Excire Foto 2025 has just been updated with workflow improvements that include opening multiple photos in an external editor, better face-tagging tools, upgraded image quality and more. Through November 16th, use coupon code EXCIREUPDATE20 for 20 percent discount on a lifetime license.
- Twirly has produced the Twirly Shirley WiFi Turntable, a web-page-controlled turntable system using Raspberry Pi Pico W and DRV8825 stepper motor driver.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
