In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Olympic flame-lighting ceremony, a new era, Nikon Z Q&A, lighting techniques and swindles.
- The Associated Press captures the Olympic Flame-Lighting Ceremony, which weather forced indoors this time. "The flame is normally lit by focusing the sun's rays with a concave mirror. But with skies overcast, officials used a backup flame kindled during a brief spell of sunshine at Monday's rehearsal."
- In After Photography, Paul Melcher looks at how we might think about photos soon. You'll assume what you see is fake and scroll past it. "The camera gave us something extraordinary: a mechanical witness that seemed to transcend human bias. That witness is dying," he writes. "What replaces it depends on choices we make now , about standards, about education, about who has access to the tools of verification."
- In Z Questions Answered, Thom Hogan covers pre-release capabilities, a new DX body and new lenses.
- Dahlia Ambrose lists a number of tutorials on Different Lighting Techniques to "help you gain an understanding of light and use it in your day-to-day photography."
- Mike Johnston prepares for Black Friday with an essay on modern Swindles to warn you about clever ways to part you with your cash.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
