16 May 2019

ON1 has released Photo Raw 2019.5, its image editing software for macOS and Windows, with improved speed, performance, workflow enhancements and several new features.

"ON1 Photo Raw 2019.5 includes significant updates to both performance and image quality, significant new features like non-destructive layers integration, new layered file features including auto-alignment and focus stacking, a new AI-powered quick mask tool, a new portrait tab, a new text tool, new digital asset management updates and new supported cameras and lenses," the company announced.

"ON1 Photo Raw 2019.5 will include several free updates throughout the year which will include new features, performance enhancements and camera updates."

WHAT'S NEW

Highlights of the new features include:

  • Dual Mode. Undock the Browse Module from the Edit Module, use a second display or make sales or client presentations on a projector or TV. Dual Mode lets you customize how you want to work when browsing and editing photos.
  • Edit History & Settings Applied. Each editing step will be viewable, along with the ability to roll-back and compare adjustments. You can also quickly view which edits from modules, tools and filters are applied to a photo.
  • Selective Sync. Enhanced granularity in which settings to apply when syncing your settings (or pasting and saving a preset). For example, you can drill down and only apply a white balance adjustment. You can also sync cropping, retouching and brush strokes between photos.
  • Hierarchical Keywords. The master keyword list will now support nesting keywords inside of other keywords. Nested keywords will allow photographers to organize keywords as they see fit. Importing a list of nested keywords from other apps like Adobe Lightroom will also be supported.
  • Text Tool Enhancements. Add a background color to a text box and control its opacity. Control the character and line spacing. New options also will allow you to duplicate and change the order of text boxes and automatically insert text from a photo's metadata.
  • Apple Photos. Integration with Apple Photos now supports the full Raw data, improving adjustments to tone and color. It also supports re-editable non-destructive editing and more native ON1 Photo Raw features like layers, crop and text.
  • A New & Faster Editing Workflow. All of the modules have been combined to create a single place to do editing. The different editing modules are now available as tabs to allow you to work in each seamlessly at once.
  • A New Workflow for Layers. Layers is no longer a separate module but accessible within the non-destructive workflow inside of Develop and Effects.
  • AI Quick Mask Tool. A new tool powered by AI allows you to identify areas of your photos to create a selection or mask. The AI technology detects your subject matter and automatically creates a mask.
  • Lightroom Photo Settings Migration. New AI-powered algorithms give you the ability to transfer Lightroom-edited photos, keep the non-destructive settings and move them into ON1 Photo Raw 2019.5.
  • Text Tool. Create posters, add your byline or add editing annotations. Control font size, color, position and more, then save to a preset to add the same text overlay to a batch of photos quickly.
  • Master Keyword List. Now you can see every keyword that you use in a single, searchable list. You can quickly apply, clear, edit or delete keywords.
  • Layered HDR Workflow. With the new non-destructive layers you can combine other photos, text or alternate exposures with your HDR photos. You can even use the masking tools to combine multiple HDR renditions.
  • Portrait Tools. The new Portrait tools automatically detect faces in your photo and retouch to smooth skin, brighten and sharpen eyes and whiten teeth.
  • User Interface. Overall contrast has been reduced to make photos stand out along with a new font to help increase readability. New icons, tabs and sliders also take up less visual space.
  • Focus Stacking. Blend multiple photos at different focus distances to increase depth-of-field.
  • Auto-Align Layers. Combine multiple photos as layers, then automatically align them based on image content.
  • Improved Local Adjustments. Local adjustments are updated to use the Raw processing data, allowing for more highlight and shadow detail with more tonal range.
  • Filter Options in Effects. Dedicated film grain, curves and color adjustment filters have been added to Effects. There's also a new way to select and browse filters.
