In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at a year without Roe, David Hume Kennerly, Christy Lee Rogers, the Voigtlander 50mm APO, the Pentax Monochrome, taking a short walk and star parties.

  • Kasia Strek presents a photo essay on The Fight Over U.S. Abortion Rights in the Year Without Roe. "The states like Mississippi that have now passed the strictest abortion laws are also typically the ones with the lowest minimum wages, the least generous policies that support families, least access to education and to health care," she says. "In many southern states, the rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity are among the highest in the country."
  • In David Hume Kennerly: Because He Was There, Michael Shaw discusses the importance of a 1971 shot showing Kennerly in Vietnam in light of Russia's war against Ukraine. "One reason we must freely see those atrocity images, Kennerly argues, is because of Russia's systematic disinformation campaign," he writes. "At the same time Putin's troops kill and, in certain cases, actually hunt photojournalists, Russia is also pressing the case that the horrific photos of death and destruction from Bucha and so many Ukrainian towns and villages are simple 'fake news.'"
  • Chris Gampat explains How Christy Lee Rogers Makes Her Beautiful Painterly Photographs. Here's a short video of her work called The Sirens from her Web site:

  • Kirk Tuck puts his new Voigtlander 50mm APO on his Leica SL2 with a Hoage M-to-L adapter, goes out in the 98° heat with a 106° heat index and returns alive with a set of 55 images he also posted on Flickr.
  • In Shooting Classic Jets With the Pentax Monochrome dSLR, Derrick Story presents a few of his recent images taken with this "unique photographic tool."
  • In How to Make Your Walk a 'Microadventure' (gift article), Jancee Dunn extends the New York Times' monthlong series on walking (which has one more installment to come) with some expert advice on making the most of what's on the other side of the door.
  • For Amateur Astronomers, 'Star Parties' Are the Antidote to Light-Polluted Skies, reports Scott Neuman. "Traditionally, "visual astronomers" have simply looked through an eyepiece to view objects that are often thousands -- or even millions -- of light-years away," he writes. "In recent years, however, sensitive digital cameras have brought amateur astrophotography into its own. Long and multiple exposures collect much more light than the human eye and can then be "stacked" to assemble extraordinary images." He links to Molly Wakeling's online gallery to prove the point.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
