In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP photos of the week, print sales, lightning bugs, Retro and a Library of America sale.
- The Associated Press features Pictures of the Week from French electronic music duo The Blaze performing onstage during the 57th Montreux Jazz Festival to Iraqis throwing stones during clashes with security forces in front of the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad to Spain's Carlos Alcaraz celebrating after beating Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the men's singles final at Wimbledon.
- In addition to his writing and content moderation, Mike Johnston thinks Our Print Sales Need to Evolve Too. The old model worked for higher volume sales. He needs something for the lower volume sales that have become the norm.
- Hillary Grigonis explains How to Photograph Lightning Bugs. "The shutter speed is essential to photographing fireflies," she writes. About the length of the firefly flashes, "typically between two and ten seconds."
- In Forget New Twitter--It's Time for a New Instagram, Lauren Goode takes a look at Retro, an app from four employees at Lone Palm Labs who have Meta credentials. "After a few weeks of using Retro, its creative constraints and its singular focus on sharing photos with actual friends feel like meditation to my tap- and swipe-happy brain," she writes.
- The Library of America is having a very rare moving sale with discounts on its definitive editions of American literary and historical works of up to 65 percent.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
