With just a handful of days to go, it looks like the site will remain available through the end of the month. The quota for bytes downloaded resets at the beginning of each month, so service should remain uninterrupted.
You may remember that Google began continually downloading the entire 4.83-GB site at the beginning of the month. That prompted us to deny access when the behavior didn't abate after a few days.
The latest Webalizer report (graphed above) shows our normal level of activity after denying access to the site by Google. At that rate, we won't exceed our quota this month.
We'll just note that the normal level of activity looks paltry only because the chart is distorted by the multiple complete downloads of the site in the first days of the month. So what you're seeing from July 9 on is the percentage of the whole 4.83-GB site downloaded by readers each day.
To put that in perspective, yesterday we published 99K worth of information in three stories. So it takes more than a few readers to register that on this graph.
We won't be allowing Google access to the site until the end of August when its behavior won't threaten to shut us down. If it reverts to its normal patterns, we'll allow access in September, otherwise we'll deny access again.
