In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Brazilian rainforest, Geoff Cardin, Ash Adams, Havana's once stately homes, Rahi Rezvani, sharper images, the Nikon Z f and cabbage.

  • In Polluted, Violent and Ablaze: The Real Brazilian Rainforest, Tommaso Protti photographs in black and white the effects of the darker side of deforestation, disease and crime.
  • Suzanne Sease features Ground Glass Project,, the personal portrait project of Geoff Cardin "reminiscent of the early days of photography where pictures were not taken, but photographs were created." He uses an 8x10 view camera to capture "the unique personalities of each person."
  • Mother Jones has spent a year investigating foster child care in the psychiatric facilities of Universal Health Services. Ash Adams took the portraits of the kids accompanying their stories.
  • Ramon Espinosa documents the deterioration of Havana's Once Stately Homes. (Click on the Photos button to start the slide show.)
  • Symphony of Faces is "a selection of pieces taken by Rahi Rezvani over recent years -- a composition made up of faces, people and themes" now showing at the Leica Gallery Amsterdam. "Creating images is like orchestrating a symphony, using a diverse arrangement of elements, and blending them into a singular emotion and spirit. Just as in a symphony orchestra," he says.
  • These Seven Camera Controls Will Give You Sharper Images, promises Jasenka Grujin. Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focus, image stabilization, a remote shutter release and that lens all play a role.
  • Thom Hogan wonders, Is the Z f a Z 6 Upgrade? Maybe, he says. Maybe not, he adds. He also lists a few observations after taking the Z f out of the box (like zero battery charge and odd customizations not to mention access to that microSD slot).
  • Too cute for words, this little Cabbage posed for four shots.

More to come, including a look at the new Adobe Elements! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
