In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Surf Durrani, Jeroen Hofman, the Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4, warm lighting and the BackLight Sprint.

  • Kate Mothes features the Atmospheric Autumnal Colors of Surf Durrani's images of the Big Cypress Bayou at the edge of Caddo Lake in eastern Texas. "I am blown away by the beauty of the cypress forest in the swamp draped with the Spanish moss and egrets and herons living in their magical, hidden little corner in Texas," he says.
  • Chris Broughton interviews Jeroen Hofman about renting a Cherrypicker to take his overhead photos. "They always get it squeaky clean for me, because they know I'm one of the few clients who will bring it back in the same condition," he says.
  • Kirk Tuck took a long walk with his new Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4 lens and has the slide show to prove it.
  • Jim Kasson continues his Visible Noise and CFA Filter Spectra series, responding to a reader's assertion that warm lighting decreases noise. "At sub-2700K, many older cameras end up with tremendously large WB multipliers for the blue channel, when compared to 'modern' CFAs," the reader wrote Kasson tests the theory, concluding, "All the noise results, with the exception of the Sigma DP1 Merrill, don't change much with the illumination change."
  • Think Tank Photo has announced its $149.75 BackLight Sprint backpack series, a smaller version of its popular BackLight series "ideal for hiking or treks around town."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
